WaveSurfer , an Open Source tool for sound manipulation and visualization, is . It is suitable for both beginners and experts. WaveSurfer's user interface is simple and logical. It can be adapted for different tasks and provides functionality in an intuitive manner. It can be used independently for a variety of tasks in speech research or education.

Typical applications are speech/sound analysis and sound annotation/transcription. WaveSurfer can also be used as a platform to support more complex or specialized applications. This can be done by either extending WaveSurfer with custom plug-ins, or embedding WaveSurfer visualization elements in other applications.
