AntiWordService is a free filter service from DEVONtechnologies that enables any Cocoa application able to read plain text, for example TextEdit or DEVONthink Personal Edition, to open Microsoft Word documents. The actual conversion is done by the command line utility Antiword So, up to now, only plain text is preserved, no images and no formatting. This may change in some future version on AntiWordService, though.

AntiWordService is a completely free software. You can free download and use it as long as you like.
